In search for a non-traditional accounting career, outside of the conventional corporate direction? The term “accountant” is commonly assumed to be someone crunching numbers in a cubicle for a Big 4 CPA firm – In reality; experienced accounting professionals are in high demand within various industries. Thanks to the numerous opportunities available in today’s generation, it is hardly expected to go the “normal” route anymore, so, here are three alternative paths to consider if you are looking to shake things up in your financial career:

Business Analyst
As an accountant, you are already familiar with identifying a company’s profits and losses. Because you are well versed in working with an organization’s data, you will easily be able to translate that experience into a business analysts’ work of collecting statistics from different sources to analyze and evaluate. Combining these skills will allow you to make informed suggestions / decisions on how to improve the financial state of a company.

Business Management
Business managers are responsible for the day-to-day operations, as well as creating and implementing process throughout an organization. Budget creation and financial forecasting is a huge part of making a company successful and are tasks that ultimately fall under the business manager’s job description. Generating financial goals and reports for senior management is also a large part of this role, all of which makes this a prime position for an accounting professional’s skills and experience.

Investor Relations
Those in investor relations are essentially the mediator between an organization and its investors, shareholders and analysts. An accounting professional’s background would really come into play with this role by creating annual business reports and communicating this information back to the respective parties – The person sitting in this position shares the quarterly earnings with key stakeholders, as well as with media, so it is important to be able to articulate the information strategically to the public.

These three job functions above can be found in multiple different industries, like digital media, start-ups and Information Technology – All of which are rapidly growing around the world. One can also hold these positions within a corporate company or at an agency setting. This provides movement and diverse options for accounting professionals, so you (hopefully) never feel stuck in one place!
