It’s no secret that happy, engaged employees are more productive employees. As we embark upon the new decade, you may be wondering how to increase the productivity of your team and improve company culture. Enter gamification. So first, what exactly is gamification? It’s implementing game elements into the workplace with the goal of increasing employee engagement and productivity. Psychology shows that creating opportunities for friendly competition can motivate employees to be more productive. If it sounds complicated, it isn’t. It’s basically turning work activities into a more game-like experience.  So now that you know a little more about what gamification is, we are going to examine what the benefits of implementing gamification in the workplace are and some ideas to get started.

Benefits and Top Gamification Trends
According to a 2019 survey, these are some of the key findings about gamification at work:

  • 89% of employees felt more productive
  • 88% felt happier at work
  • 83% felt motivated with gamification training, while 61% of those who didn’t get gamification training felt bored and/or unproductive

The most common and popular gamification elements are:

  • Rewards
  • Badges
  • Points
  • Leaderboards
  • Levels

If you find the above statistics convincing and want to implement gamification in your workplace here are some tips:

  • Determine and clearly establish the goals and processes to your team
  • Offer relevant and desirable rewards
  • Recognize everyone’s contributions
  • Adopt gamification in your trainings
  • Measure the successes and failures of implementing gamification in your workplace and adjust accordingly

Gamification can positively impact employees but isn’t a magic bullet. It’s important to design and tailor it to your team’s needs. When done right, it can help employees stay motivated and productive.
