Keys to Success in the First Three Months of a New Job

After spending months interviewing, you finally get that anxiously awaited call – You got the job! Starting any new role can be stressful and exciting all in one, with the first 90 days always full of challenges – New faces, new processes, and, most relevantly, new responsibilities. These three months are commonly seen as the most crucial, as they are spent trying to impress your boss while proving your competency to hold this position. Luckily, there are several strategies to help make these 90 days as successful as possible.

Get Familiar
One important thing to task yourself with is getting to know your team – These individuals are, undoubtedly, who you will be spending the most time with day-to-day. The connections made will help you from a social perspective but also from a professional one – Purely spending the time will present how each person works and what makes them tick. It will also make you more relatable in the office culture.

Define Success
With any new position, everything is, just that, new, including the overall goals for your team. Consider setting aside time to meet with your manager to discuss their individual goals for you, as well as how your expertise and objectives will help in the grander scheme of things. Discuss how you will work together as a team, and the necessary resources for you to tap into in order to do the job (and do it well). Understanding how they measure overall success should provide you with more specific guidelines of how to tackle your first set of projects to wow your boss, while feeling confident in yourself.

3-Month Review
After the initial legwork is done and you have a few assignments under your belt, request a 3-month review with your supervisor to discuss your wins and losses thus far. 90 days provides an ample amount of time for them to get to know you, your working style, and your passion for the job – A review provides a simple way to touch base on your growth in the position, while a time to outline future milestones your manager would like to see you hit over the next three months or beyond. This also displays great initiative on your part to discuss ways to enhance your development, while showing your openness to constructive criticism.

Self-assurance is the most important thing to maintain during this transition. Challenges will definitely present themselves, especially while you are adjusting, but remember you were chosen for this job for a reason! Remain focused on what you have learned over the first 90 days and keep looking forward to what is to come – These tactics, hopefully, will be your recipe for continued success!
